Pyrethrum or Pyrethrins
They are one and the same,
insecticides derived from the extract of certain chrysanthemum flowers. This extract (pyrethrum) contains Pyrethrin I and Pyrethrin II (pyrethrins). Pyrethrum is very effective on a wide spectrum of insect
species, and is safe and environmentally friendly. In fact, It is one of the least poisonous insecticides to mammals, and is the most approved insecticide by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Pyrethrum also leaves NO residue after it breaks down.
- Non Toxic to Humans or Animals
- Natural but powerful to insects
- Most EPA Approved Insecticide
- Leaves no residue
Pyrethroids are not the same - Don't get Confused!
Pyrethroids are synthetic (man-made) versions of the pyrethrin types and were developed to improve the performance over natural Pyrethrum, which breaks down in sunlight in as little as 12 hours. Pyrethroids may be longer lasting,
but NOT necessarily more effective and are much more toxic and harmful than natural pyrethrum. Which is why KONK insecticide sprays are safe to use around food areas, or areas where humans and animals traffic.
- More toxic - Not safe for humans and animals
- Not natural - man made
ThermaCell Repellent is a safe synthetic pyrethrin dispersing appliance that creates a personal bug barrier when outdoors.
How Pyrethrins works and what it can do
Pyrethrins (and pyrethroids) act as contact poisons, affecting the insect’s nervous system. When exposed directly, it causes a "knockdown" affect. Just a few molecules alters coordination and almost immediately
drops flying insects. However, insects can recover from the first knockdown. A synergist like Piperonyl Butoxide is usually added to Pyrethrin based insecticides to make it more effective, restricting insects from
detoxifying the pyrethrum allowing it to continue killing the insect.
Insects can also detect the irritating pyrethrum (to them, not humans or animals)
, driving them out of there hiding places. Therefore, pyrethrins kill insects and act as a "flushing agent" at the same time. If used correctly, the insects will get caught up in the
insecticide while attempting to flee. Many don't realize that a flood of insects out of hiding is a good thing. In fact, it is a good sign that the insecticide is working and the infestation is more apparent than you thought.
- Acts as a Contact Poison
- Knockdown Effect almost instantly
- Can be used as a flushing agent / deterrent
